CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?

Acupuncture combined with traditional weight loss methods results in greater weight loss, according to recent research. In these cases, one to three acupuncture weight loss treatments may be both safe and effective in helping clients in meeting their reasonable weight loss goals.

It's a staggering fact that up to a quarter of all Americans are overweight. Every year, Americans spend more than $33 billion on weight-loss programs in their struggle to lose those excess pounds. Regrettably, a staggering 95% fail in their attempt to lose the weight required for good health. Fortunately, acupuncture can help you lose weight.

Acupuncture is a technique that involves inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific body points or "energy pathways." Endorphins, the body's natural "feel good" hormones, are stimulated by the inserted needles. This can have a calming, relaxing effect, which can counteract the need for excessive eating caused by stress, frustration, or anxiety. Acupuncture can help those suffering from this condition relax and lose weight without the use of drugs.

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Weight Loss

Excessive weight gain, according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, is caused primarily by a body imbalance caused by a malfunction of the spleen and liver organ systems. Acupuncture practitioners who are skilled will focus on specific body areas to affect weight loss. Among these are the endocrine system and the kidneys, which are addressed to treat water retention and stimulate nerve and hormonal rebalancing. The thyroid gland and spleen are also targeted to restore sugar and hormonal balance. Finally, the adrenal and ovary glands are involved in the treatment of weight gain caused by menopause or premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Acupuncture has a quick effect on some people, and they only need treatments every other week.

Ear stapling is another Chinese acupuncture weight loss practice. This involves manipulating ear points to control food cravings. Auricular acupuncture, also known as ear acupuncture, has been used successfully to help smokers and heroin addicts quit smoking and using drugs. Ear acupuncture, when properly administered by a qualified acupuncturist, may help some people lose weight. According to one study published in Medical Acupuncture, ear acupuncture combined with a 2,000 calorie diet and a 15-minute walk helped people lose weight. The study included 20 obese women ranging in age from 22 to 42 years. Half of those who received weekly 15-minute ear acupuncture sessions lost 10 pounds. Those who did not receive ear acupuncture lost only three pounds on average. Furthermore, the women who received the acupuncture treatments reported decreased appetite.

What to Expect From an Acupuncture Session

You can expect to be poked a lot if you visit a licensed acupuncture treatment center. You probably already know that, but before beginning your treatment, your acupuncturist will discuss your goals, health history, and expectations with you. After developing a treatment plan, you will be asked to lie down while acupuncture needles are inserted into specific pressure points on your body. In some cases, your acupuncturist may believe that you would benefit from laser acupuncture, which uses a mildly charged probe rather than the typical thin needle. Your acupuncturist may also decide to use an ear seed during your treatment. This "seed" is placed in your ear and massaged regularly to help reduce food cravings.

Potential Side Effects

When performed by a properly licensed and trained professional, acupuncture is generally safe. You may experience minor side effects such as minor bleeding or bruising at the insertion site, soreness, or general discomfort. An injection of the insertion area, organ puncture, or injury due to deep needling are all serious but incredibly rare side effects.

Precautions

To avoid or reduce the chance of infection, ensure that your acupuncturists only use one-time use, disposable needles during your session. If you have a blood disorder, you should consult your doctor before beginning treatment. Acupuncture treatments should be avoided by patients taking medications or having a pacemaker installed.
